2006 JAVA JAZZ FESTIVAL 18 Apr 2005
The birth of the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival (JJF) was celebrated in real style in Indonesia's first ever international festival of jazz and heritage on this scale. Hosted in the capital, Jakarta, the prestigious festival was a huge success and a cultural force, attracting excellent reviews and feedback.
Inspired by the spirit of Martin Luther King, who also had a dream, we had set out to prove that we could make our dream come true and herald in a new dawn for our country's cultural heritage. Slowly, but surely, we set the stage for an unprecedented lineup of local and international, multicultural jazz musicians who came, saw and conquered the audiences. The festival drew more than 48,000 visitors and was heard by millions of additional listeners through broadcasts on national and regional radio, and watched by several millions more in several broadcast concerts on television.
Both the Culture and Tourism Minister and the Governor of Jakarta were delighted at our success in opening the door to the richness of local arts and culture, and in proving to the world that Indonesia, and its capital, are just as safe as anywhere else.
From the very beginning, our commitment was to a vision of this great festival as one of the most important events on Indonesia's arts and cultural calendar.
We aim, through our annual festival and associated events, to establish a vibrant new cultural image of the capital as an important center for Indonesia's vastly diverse music and culture, including jazz.
After all, although the status of New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz has been disputed, it still played a crucial role during its infancy, which explains why it has been diplomatically re-christened as the 'Cradle of Jazz'
Now it's the turn of those who want to join us in celebrating the first anniversary, or the birthday, of our new baby, as it gets bigger and better with each passing year.
The star-studded line-up for 2006 will have even more popular appeal. Whilst keeping jazz at its core, we are pulling in a diverse range of music - soul, jazz, funk, R&B, blues, roots, main stream, pop jazz, rock jazz, smooth jazz, not to mention jazz dangdut, keroncong jazz and much more! Yes, indeed...something for everyone!
Through showcasing Indonesia’s foremost jazz artists and letting them share the spotlight with world-class artists, we will build on the spontaneous rapport observed at the 2005 festival. Noted local singer Ruth Sahanaya, for example joined heartthrob Eric Benet onstage, and the duo captivated young and old alike with their performance.
